Old-style or Traditional typefaces are the oldest and most recognisable. At small sizes, they are well-suited to extended reading and commonly used in books, magazines and newspapers.
Characteristics of old-style or traditional fonts:
The counters (white space inside letters like p,b,o) have diagonal stress. 
Strokes vary subtly in thickness, at an angle. 
The serifs are clearly-defined and shaped. 
Letters are based on pen-drawn forms.
