Humanist typefaces are quite similar to serif fonts - they are based on Old style faces - but without the serifs. They are good for small amounts of text that need to be read quickly: signs, quotes, graphs, lists. Their pen-drawn look means they are easy to combine with Old style typefaces to create a good-looking document.
Characteristics of humanist fonts:
Little variation in stroke weight.
Less rigid shapes, more pen-drawn.
