Pompey suffered their first ever defeat at The Riverside Stadium as goals by Chris Riggott and Tuncay Sanli saw them leave the north-east empty handed.
Harry Redknapp made four changes from the side that lost to Blackburn last week. Hreidarsson returned from suspension to replace Lauren at left-back while Baros came in for Kanu up front.
In midfield Muntari and Utaka were missing with rib and ankle injuries respectively, so Kranjcar and Mvuemba both came in to the starting 11.
Pompey had the first decent opportunity on four minutes when Hreidarsson got in front of the Boro defence to meet Kranjcar’s free-kick but failed to make a clean connection and the ball ballooned up in the air before being cleared to safety.
Baros then saw a shot blocked and Johnson fired just wide before play broke to the other end and Jamie Ashdown was forced to make a decent stop to deny Afonso Alves.
After a slow period of play Baros should have done better on 20 minutes. The Czech Republic striker blazed the ball over the bar from the edge of the area after a neat build-up from Mvuemba and Diop.
Distin then made a superb goal-saving tackle to dispossess Fabio Rochemback on the edge of the area as the Brazilian prepared to shoot. Johnson curled a shot towards goal on 38 minutes but it was never going to trouble Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer who comfortably claimed the ball.
But it was the hosts who took the lead two minutes later when Riggott got in between Distin and Hreidarsson to head home Rochemback’s corner.
Pompey fell further behind eight minutes into the second half when Tuncay drifted in unnoticed at the near post to glance home Stewart Downing’s corner. Kranjcar came close to pulling a goal back on 63 minutes but the Croatia midfielder curled his shot past the post. Then, after going on a great run through the Middlesbrough defence, Distin saw his effort well blocked by Julio Arca.
Nugent and Davis came on for Baros and Diop on 67 minutes as Redknapp attempted to rescue something from the game.
But it was the hosts who threatened next and Ashdown had to be at his best to keep out Downing’s effort from point-blank range.
Defoe thought he should have won a penalty on 82 minutes after being caught by David Wheater but referee Peter Walton was not interested and waved play on.
